Bilingual Project

We are pioneers in the use of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) in higher education, implementing this approach with the Bilingual Groups of our Infant and Primary Education degree programmes.

CLIL is currently used in most bilingual schools in Spain. This approach enables students to improve their English language skills while also acquiring subject contents.

CLIL Approach

We teach through CLIL so that students can use this approach when they become teachers.

The Specialisation Programme in Bilingual Education, which CUCC has been developing for over 10 years, encompasses university education (Bilingual Groups), teacher training, and research.

In 2014, this programme was awarded the European Language Label by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport through the Spanish Service for the Internationalisation of Education (SEPIE) for incentivising language learning as a necessary vehicle for authentic European integration.

By choosing to study an Education Degree in a bilingual group, you will:

  • Experience first-hand how a child learns a subject in a foreign language, which you can later apply to your future teaching career.
  • Receive language and methodological training to teach subjects through English.
  • Broaden your possibilities in the Spanish and international labour market.
  • Improve your English level.
  • Obtain a European Diploma Supplement indicating the university degree subjects that you have taken in a Bilingual Programme.
  • Receive training that will help you later with the professional language accreditation exams that several Spanish autonomous communities require teachers to pass in order to work in bilingual schools.
Profesores especialistas

The Bilingual Project is formed by twelve professors (see photograph) specialising in different areas of knowledge. The entire team has been trained to teach through CLIL. Furthermore, all of the professors hold official English level certificates and undergo annual training and refresher courses to ensure the highest quality of teaching.

In addition, in each of the bilingual groups of the Infant and Primary Education degree programmes, there is a native English-speaking language assistant who supports the specialist content teacher. The role of the language assistant is to complete information, improve students’ language skills and vocabulary, to identify errors and areas for improvement, and, ultimately, to increase the students’ level of English.

Inmersión Progresiva

You will learn progressively due to the organisation of the study programme. From the 1st to the 4th year, students take an increasing number of subjects in English. In the 1st year, only two subjects are taught in English (one each term). Then, in the 2nd year, students take four subjects in English. Following this progressive structure, you will end up taking 50% of your degree in English as part of the Bilingual Project.

Prácticas en centros bilingües

In addition, you have the option to carry out the teaching internship portion of your degree programme in bilingual schools all over Spain, as well as in schools in the UK, Ireland, Finland, USA, Nepal, and Australia.

Similarly, you can also study part of your degree in English-speaking universities through the Erasmus programme or other agreements maintained by our International Relations Office.

Menciones y DECA

The Infant and Primary Education degrees programmes are fully compatible with any of the specialisation courses that can be chosen in the 3rd year.

Bilingual group students can choose the Foreign Language (English) specialisation to train as English language teachers. Alternatively, they can choose a specialisation course taught in Spanish, such as Physical Education, Special Educational Needs, Art Education, and/or the DECA Qualification (Ecclesiastical Declaration of Academic Competence for teaching religion in schools).

Prueba de Nivel Grupos Bilingües y Certificación de Nivel de inglés

If you would like to enrol for the Bilingual Group of the Infant or Primary Education Degree, or the Double Education Degree, please consider the following two points:

  1. On the pre-enrolment form, you must mark the “Bilingual Group” option as a preference. However, we recommend that you also include other options on the application form so that you can enter a Spanish-speaking group if you are unable to join a Bilingual Group due to an insufficient level of English.
  2. You must be able to prove that you have at least a B1 level of English by means of an official certificate (click here to see valid English certificates). Alternatively, you must take and English level test prior to enrolment.
